The Format - The First Single
So let’s cause a scene,
clap our hands and stomp our feet or somethin’,
yeah somethin’
I’ve just got to get myself over me
“Oh the road trips. Oh the packs and packs and packs of reds that I smoked. Oh the whiskey sours and the boone farms and the 5 am diners and the coffee, rice pudding, the late night phone calls, the hand written letters, the drumming on the steering wheel, the driving hours to share a few hours and kisses. Oh the dance parties in attics! Oh the swimming in waterfalls! Oh the times we had!”
all of that just went through my mind with in the half a second of pressing play to this song.
This album always reminds me of getting off the T by the Fenway stop and not telling anyone where I was going and getting this CD and it was really late and raining… and walking through the city and aw shit… I miss Boston.
the Untitled.
you know, sometimes I amaze even myself.

The Format- Simple Twist of Fate (Dylan Cover)
Two of my favorite things.

I’m going to see Fun. in December and it occurred to me a couple of hours ago that they’ve probably put out more than the one demo track at this point. I was right, they have an album out, “Aim and Ignite”. It’s not exactly a recent development (released in 2009, oops). I don’t know where I’ve been that I didn’t know this.
But at any rate, I like it. It sounds pretty similar to The Format’s later stuff (although a step towards pop and away from rock, and just a bit more upbeat overall), which is to be expected, but, hey, I love The Format so that’s definitely not a complaint. Basically, this album makes me want to drive around town with the windows down, music blaring, doing a ridiculous car dance. I’m so glad Nate Ruess is back. I’m excited to see them live.
What she said.
Pop tunes need more pedal steel.
Snails, by The Format, off the Snails EP.
“Cynical Girl,” Marshall Crenshaw (1982). Guitar pop doesn’t get any better than this.
This can not help but make your Wednesday better.
FROM THIS WE LEARN: The Format are/were fans of Marshall Crenshaw (no shame there, just pointing this out).
The opening riff from “The First Single” off of The Format’s first album Interventions + Lullabies is totally directly based off of Mr. Crenshaw’s tune. Awesome.
Also awesome: apparently the YouTube video linked to above of “The First Single” is some kind of alternate version. If any of you are Format fans, you’ll hear that the bridge and lead vocals after it are totally different from the album version. Interesting. Perhaps it’s the single version of The First Single? Weird.
