These bands are coming in to WERS tomorrow and Thursday, and I couldn’t be happier.

Trampled by Turtles will be live at 2:15 tomorrow afternoon.

Lucero will be live at 3:15 Thursday afternoon.

Parking that thing must be such a pain… Dude just almost took out a tree.
Being on-air at all hours of the day for these last four years means I’ve seen some weird stuff out these windows, but a giant car-sized L.L. Bean boot takes the cake, I think.

Why yes, that is the L.L. Bean Bootmobile parking across the street from the WERS studios.
When you’re greeted by a giant motorized boot at 7:45 on a Saturday morning, you know it’s going to be a great day.

I’m about to unload a whole bunch of Honeyhoney on y’all. They came by the WERS studios earlier today and were a real treat: nice folks, good players, and Suzanne’s really pretty.

The trick with this one is the little uptick in her voice about halfway through the chorus. That’s the money. The song is two minutes and fourteen seconds long, the chorus comes around four times, and every time I hear that rising line I smile. You will too. They played it in the studio today, and I can’t wait to listen back to the finished, mixed, & mastered version.

The more I listen to Billy Jack, the more I’m astounded that the band can go from big, swoopy, atmospheric brooding to straight-up country two-step. not only that, they’ll drop some real bombs lyrically as well. Here, not so much, but just wait for the next couple of tracks.

Fanfarlo - “Shiny Things”

Many of the songs on Fanfarlo’s debut album Reservoir hit me immediately like a ton of bricks. A noted exception was the song “Finish Line” that slowly builds to a climax that pays off so incredibly that you can’t help but feel your heart swell. Rooms Filled With Light takes that model and expands it with the album growing the more you listen to it. “Shiny Things” is a perfect microcosm of the album as a whole, building slowly to full instrumentation, complete with brass and whistles.

I’m going to see them at Lincoln Hall in Chicago on March 28. Feel free to give me a holler, and check them out if they’re going to stop in your town.

And they’re really nice guys, even when they’re running late for their sound check. Hear my interview with the band sometime between March 24 and April 1 on wers.

Mike Doughty - Na Na Nothing

Pretty sure I’m not supposed to post this one because it’s not up on wers.org yet, but it’s too good. The station’s piano sounds beautiful, and I’ve never heard/seen anyone play guitar like Mike. That rattly, grumbly tone he gets is, to my ear, totally unlike anybody else. Plus, he’s a nice dude - his was one of the most natural-sounding interviews I’ve done, and he gave me a ticket to his show that night! And, if you pay extra-special attention, you can totally see Mariel grooving out in the background.

Ha Ha Tonka - Usual Suspects

These dudes only wanted one mic. We ended up putting two more in the room to fill it out, but what you hear is mostly just that one in the middle. Pretty awesome.

Also, I dropped my pen. I am the very picture of professionalism.
