It’s Been a Long Night in New York City
Sure has, John.
I just got back from an adventure. Walked into the parking garage on 25th and 11th Ave, handed the attendant my release form, and within five minutes I was behind the wheel of a brand-spankin’-new GM fleet Chevy Avalanche Z-71. Complete with Michigan manufacturer plates, I must’ve looked like someone from another world. I found the country station on XM, put my shades back on, and hit the pavement. I was due at JFK in two hours to pick up the editor of PickupTrucks.com, who is in town for a week.
You all know how much I despise big trucks. And this was certainly no exception- the thing is built on the same chassis as the Cadillac Escalade, for comparison. I just had to signal and start to change lanes, and the cabs backed off. It was awesome. Combine that with the leather interior, great-sounding stereo, and all sorts of other little new-car tricks, I was pretty much sold. Sure, it was slow and heavy and felt like I was gonna roll over on some of the off-ramps, but I had a hell of a time. Almost makes me want to get a truck… But not really.
Long story short (but ha! You’ve already read the long story!) I am now kind of ok with pickup trucks when they’re as much fun as this one. Especially when I get to drive them through New York City.
